Yesssss

Well, the day of the procedure arrived.  Neither of thought it would actually happen, but at about 3pm yesterday, Mum had her first cataract sorted.
She reports that the consultant was 'lovely', but he hadn't seen a cataract as thick as hers in the last ten years - 'it was like granite', apparently.
This morning she went back to the clinic to have the patch removed and a quick cornea check.
She was told to get there for 9.45am.
She hadn't been seen by 11am, because there was a staff meeting taking place when she arrived.  You'd think they'd have had that in the diary yesterday afternoon.

I wish I'd been there, because when the patch came off, Mum discovered she now has more sight in that eye than she's had since she was about 8 years old (it's always been a lazy eye).
That is just wonderful.

10 days to go until the other eye is sorted.
There's a note on her notes which says, 'DO NOT CANCEL'.
Yes, we approve of that.
But it makes you wonder how many other people could be cancelled that day.

I hope to find out the answer to that question, and others, when this is all done and dusted.
I'm compiling a list of questions for a Freedom of Information request about the level of cancellations, postponements etc.

But for now, I'm going to smile a lot and think about what it must be like to get your sight back in just one eye after such a long time.
