As it says on the tin...

A couple of things to share today...

First of all, this blog is called 'Mother's Pride'.  Designed to reflect the story of a fit and relatively healthy 71 year old (I'll be on the naughty step again for bringing age up), I've got something to share today at the other end of the spectrum.

I know the mother of the two girls in this news feature, and only want to say 'Happy Birthday... 2 years of happiness for everyone who knows you'.

In other news, Mum's had the second cataract done.  She'd had double vision after the first, because she was seeing out of an eye for the first time in decades.  She was told not to worry as this would go when the second eye was done.

Second eye done.  She took the patch off later that day, but still the double vision was there.  Worrying.  But of course, a week later it's getting back to normal and she's back in the car.  For such a cheap procedure, it is one which brings stunning results.  Except Mum says she looks in the mirror and sees an 'old lady'.  But I bet she wouldn't swap the years of fuzzy vision for what she's got now - the ability to see colours and a determined skip in her very independent step.  And anyway, as all her friends say, they look old too.

She's off on a cruise to see the Norwegian fjords this summer... that's not something she could have appreciated 6 weeks ago.

Finally for today... take a listen to this from Radio 4's Today programme this morning http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9511000/9511417.stm

If there's anything which should make you sit up and listen if you have any thoughts of ever having to look at care for older people, it's this.

I'm wondering if Southern Cross is the Northern Rock of the care sector.
